Solver-based vs. grid-based multilevel Monte Carlo for two phase flow and transport in random heterogeneous porous media

چکیده
Monte Carlo (MC) is a well known method for quantifying uncertainty arising for example in subsurface flow problems. Although robust and easy to implement, MC suffers from slow convergence. Extending MC by means of multigrid techniques yields the multilevel Monte Carlo (MLMC) method. MLMC has proven to greatly accelerate MC for several applications including stochastic ordinary equations in finance, elliptic stochastic partial differential equations and also hyperbolic problems. In this study, MLMC is combined with a streamlinebased solver to assess uncertain two phase flow and transport in random heterogeneous porous media. The performance of MLMC is compared to MC for a two dimensional reservoir with multi-point Gaussian logarithmic permeability fields. The influence of the variance and the correlation length of the logarithmic permeability on the MLMC performance is studied.

Analysis of Variance-based Mixed Multiscale Finite Element Method and Applications in Stochastic Two-phase Flows
The stochastic partial differential systems have been widely used to model physical processes, where the inputs involve large uncertainties. Flows in random and heterogeneous porous media is one of the cases where the random inputs (e.g., permeability) are often modeled as a stochastic field with high-dimensional random parameters. To treat the high dimensionality and heterogeneity efficiently,...
متن کاملMultilevel and quasi-Monte Carlo methods for uncertainty quantification in particle travel times through random heterogeneous porous media
In this study, we apply four Monte Carlo simulation methods, namely, Monte Carlo, quasi-Monte Carlo, multilevel Monte Carlo and multilevel quasi-Monte Carlo to the problem of uncertainty quantification in the estimation of the average travel time during the transport of particles through random heterogeneous porous media. We apply the four methodologies to a model problem where the only input p...

The present work involves numerical simulation of a steady, incompressible forcedconvection fluid flow through a matrix of porous media between two parallel plates at constanttemperature. A Darcy model for the momentum equation was employed. The mathematical model forenergy transport was based on single phase equation model which assumes local thermal equilibriumbetween fluid and solid phases. ...
متن کاملImproved Monte Carlo methods for computing failure probabilities of porous media flow systems
We study improvements of standard and multilevel Monte Carlo methods for point evaluation of the cumulative distribution function (failure probability) applied to porous media two-phase flow simulations with uncertain permeability. In an injection scenario with sweep efficiency of the injected phase as quantity of interest, we seek the probability that this quantity of interest is smaller than ...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation and Estimation of the Transvers Macrodispersivity Coefficient of Aqueous Phase (Miscible) Contaminants of Salt Water in a Heterogeneous and Homogeneous Porous Media
Deterioration of groundwater resources in coastal regions due to the progression of saline water in aquifers in these regions is currently one of the important issues in providing water needs in these areas. In coastal regions, saline water enters the aquifer from below in shape of wedge. Due to the difference in the density between fresh and salty water, an interface zone forms between two flu...
